While in my second sculpture class in college, I was working on a wooden sculpture of a human figure. I had the idea to cut a small square hole in her chest and insert a little copper heart. From then on, the copper heart became a signature element in nearly all my work. As my skills and range of tools increased, I started making varrying sizes of wooden hearts. Some were stand alone pieces and other were incorporated into other pieces of art. The symbol was soon prevalent thoughout my entire body of work. Once durring an interview for a local newspaper, I was explaining how I transitioned for Graphic Design to working as a full-time sculptor. I was telling her how I had no passion for advertising and the move was a matter of "following my heart". She said "Oh, so that's why you have you have so many hearts in your work." I had never thought of it that way, but perhaps she was right.
